Bridges over the Cape Fear
Old US 1 & Railroad bridges near Moncure NC.
Last Saturday was my first time on the Cape Fear River. I put in at the NC-42 boat launch and proceeded upstream. It was about 9:30am when I got in the water.
I paddled until about 2:00pm, when I got in sight of these bridges and decided to head back. I was supposed to be at work by 5 and it was about half hour drive. When got to the bridge, I set the GPS to map back to the launch and realized that I had gone 5 miles. By then it was about 2:20 and I knew I was in trouble. I started paddling as fast as I could.
About half way back, I stopped to take a picture of Mermaid Point and realized that my Treo was not working. Apparently, I got some moisture in the ziplock bag and it shorted out the connector. It was in permanent Hotsync mode. So I didn't get my picture, but more importantly, I couldn't call work to let them know I was going to be late.
I finally got back to the launch about 5:45 (I think this kayak is part time machine), packed up & finally got to work about an hour late. Not too bad. I did manage to dry the phone out in A/C vent so I could call and let them know I'd be late. After that, the phone wouldn't call anymore.
All in all, I would say my first solo mini-trek was successful. I saw some beautiful landscape and wildlife. Next time I'll try and take more pictures now that I have a place to put them.
